Retrieve Raiders stopped the Victory Valley Royals and staved off excellent shooting from junior national guard Marlon Pollydore, who had a tournament-high 35 points, in scoring a thrilling 58-57 win, while the Half Mile Bulls handed the Kashif and Shanghai Kings a 62-50 defeat when the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) Under-23 basketball championship continued on Tuesday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court.
In ensuring their team the win, the Raiders were led by a combined effort from junior national player Geoffrey Larose, who dunked in 13 points. He received support from Duel Garner and Sheldron Noel, both getting 12 points. Centre Omar Sam added eight points in the Raiders win.
With scores level at 34, the Raiders were able to open up a 41-34 gap before the Royals rebounded to lead 47- 43. Then, a three-point shot from down town with 7: 40 left in the fourth quarter, from guard Deval Wilson, sent the Raiders up 48-47.
As the game clock wound down, back-to-back shots from three-point territory from guard Pollydore and a two-point play gave his team the lead. However, Raiders’ Omar Sam replied with a shot from beyond the arc and this helped the Raiders to tie the scores at 57, before centre Akeel Primo formalised the win for Raiders with a shot from the free throw line for 58-57 winning score.
Apart from Pollydore’s 35 points, the next best scorer for the losing Royals was junior national player Chris Williams who got 13 points.
The Bulls had earlier outscored the Kings after taking control at the end of the third quarter, 41- 26.
Turner was the spear head of the big Bulls lineup which included Keon Cameron with 11, Travin Dryden 10 and centre Horace Gurrick with eight points. Quincy Easton gave support to Rose, contribut ing 12 points in the loss.
The competition continues tomorrow with two more matches at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court.
